MELASTI CEREMONY

As one of favourite tourism destination in the world, Bali offering many tourism object with very beautiful scenery.  Beside of that, Bali also offering culture tourism which very unique.  Bali owns immeasurable culture where every day we can find the Hindu ritual in the island, which is famous known as an Island of the God. One of Balinese culture is Melasti Ceremony.
Melasti ceremony is purification the Pratima (God symbol) and other Hindu Religion symbols such as: Barong or Jero Gede, Rangda, Ratu Ayu, Ratu Rarung, Tumbak, Tedung, Bandrang, Rontek and many more at the beach. The Pratima usually put on a place called Joli. Melasti Ceremony is conducted once a year in conjunction with the big Hindu’s Holiday or Hindu’s new year called Nyepi Day or silent day. The Melasti event is generally done three days before Nyepi day or depends to the local custom countryside rule.
First, all Pratima’s and Hindu symbols gathering in Desa Temple or Bale Agung Temple from each Temple. After that, in that day or the next day all Hindu people troop to carry the holy symbol of Hindu religion to the sea to be cleaned and looked at the alongside road the parade of Umbul-umbul symbol and others. It is also accompanied by the traditional gamelan enliven this event.
After come back  from beach the Pratima’s and all Hindu symbols usually given a sacrifice called Caru Pamendak in front of Desa Temple or Bale Agung Temple. After that the Pratima and other symbol usually stay for one or two night or hung up the local low, in the temple.
One day before Nyepi day or in Pengrupukan day, all Pratima’s and holy symbols back to each Temple. Its called Mepiak. In the afternoon, all Hindu people arrange a Mecaru Ceremony in their home and also arrange Ogoh – Ogoh Parade for welcoming the Nyepi day in next day.

  Temple Purification 
           
Bali well kown with culture tourism. Balinese culture is influences by Hindu’s Religion because 78% of Balinese people are Hinduism. As we know, Bali has so many cultures and traditions. One of it is temple purification. 
There are so many temples in Bali. That because Bali called island of thousand temples. If Balinese people bilt or rebulit a temple, they not just built it. But after they finish bulit the temple they will be arrange a purification ceremony. There are some steps to rebuilt a temple such as:
Ø  Ngingsiran
It’s mean moving the holy symbols to other place because the temple will be rebuilt.
Ø  Ngenceb (Mulang Dasar)
It’s mean put the first stone as the foundation of the shrines.
And than continue to built the temple.
            After the rebuilt process finish there are also many steps to make the temple holy and return the function.  There are some kinds of purification ceremony from the smallest one until the biggest one. For example, the main procession that usually arrange in village temple such as:
Ø  Starting to built places for put the sacrifices or we call it sesalon.
Ø  After that, start to make sacrifices.
Ø  11 days before the main ritual, there will be Negtegan Manik Galih or Betara Istri. It’s a ritual for God of rice in order to blessing all procession of the ceremony.
Ø  3 days after that, they will be continued a procession called Ngingsah. It’s mean washing. So, in this procession they will be washing and also cooking the rice for make sacrifice.
Ø  After that continue to Melaspas Bagia Pula Kerthi. It’s a procession to make a sacrifice called Bagia Pula Kerthi and all sacrifices holy and ready to present to the God.
Ø  Tawur. Is the biggest kind of “Caru”. Tawur usually use buffalo, cow, goat and other animals for sacrifice. This procession is for neutralize the bad spirits in the temple area and make it holy. 
Ø  Melasti. Is a purification the “Pretima” or God symbol and other Hindu Religion symbols to the sea, to be cleaned an make it holy. 

Ø  The Main Ritual
The main ritual consist of:
v  Ngambe and Makuh. Is a ritual to returning the holy of the shrines.
v  Mendem Pedagingan. Is a ritual to plant the Panca Datu or five material such as : gold, silver, iron, copper and tin.
v  Melaspas. Is a ritual to presenting all sacifrices to the God.


That’s all the arrangement of temple purification ceremony.
